Added Fish Protection Planned

Another step is being taken by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to reduce the “taking” of fish at the Central Valley Project’s Jones Pumping Plant in the Delta near Tracy.
Bureau officials have awarded a $4,273,369 contract to replace and improve a system of louvers in the Tracy Fish Collection Facility located close to the pumps at Byron, San Joaquin County.
Louvers are used to slow the flow of water through the collection facility and divert fish into holding tanks, preventing them from being sucked into the pumps that supply the CVP’s Delta-Mendota Canal with Delta water.
The Delta-Mendota Canal supplies the San Joaquin River Exchange Contractors with a substitute supply of Delta water. In exchange, Friant Division contractors of CVP water receive San Joaquin River supplies diverted into the Friant-Kern and Madera canals at Friant Dam.
Also supplied with CVP water are several districts along the Delta-Mendota Canal and in the CVP’s San Luis Unit along the valley’s West Side.
PROJECT’S SCOPE
Secondary louvers will be replaced and fish screens that can be moved within the system are to be added. Work is to be completed next spring.
