Sacramento Will Remove Ammonia From Sewage Effluent

A key contributor to Delta pollution, one believed to have harmed the food chain for native fish species, finally appears destined to be on the way out.
Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District officials have agreed to settlement of litigation under which the capital city region would be committed to re-moving ammonia from its sewage effluent, which finds its way into the Delta after treatment.
Under the settlement, the district will no longer contest terms of a State Water Resources Control Board requirement issued three years ago that requires ammonia and nitrogen to be removed from treated wastewater.
The effluent, generated from a population of 1.4 million, is the largest single source of ammonia entering the Delta environment where it contributes to declines in native fish species.
A district engineer called it “a very good business decision for the sanitation district.”
