Salmon Grown In Rice Fields

Scientists working on a new way for farmers to grow salmon along with their crops have met with success in a rice field located in the Yolo Bypass.
Using 20 acres of rice field as an experimental floodplain, researchers introduced 50,000 Chinook salmon fry. The fish grew steadily.
“What we’re seeing is fish that are growing at absolutely spectacular rates,” said Jacob Katz, one of the study’s principal researchers.
The fish had four times the growth of young salmon in rivers before being released on their way to the ocean.
Scientists are tracking their progress, and hope to continue the experiment into the future.
