Water Quality Solution?

Study Will Examine Surface Supplies For Use By Northern Tulare County Towns

Tulare County is beginning a feasibility study into what could be a solution for some of the drinking water quality woes being experienced in five small disadvantaged north county communities.
Being examined is whether surface water supplied by the Alta Irrigation District – which diverts its irrigation water from the neighboring Kings River – could be used for municipal supplies in East Orosi, Sultana, Monson, Seville and Yettem. All of the communities are located within Alta’s boundaries. The concept envisions working through the Orosi Public Utilities District and developing a surface water treatment plant and additional facilities to replace surface water supplies that would have been used for irrigation.
The Visalia Times-Delta noted that the small towns have received national notoriety over contamination, largely from nitrates, from wells and dilapidated delivery systems.
The state is funding the $247,580 study that was approved recently by the Tulare County Board of Supervisors.
Alta General Manager Chris Kapheim said a regional approach would be the most efficient solution. “This solves many problems at the same time,” he said.
